Blocked Drains - Home remedies

The Bent Wire Hanger Or Drain Snake

This is a common home remedy. Likewise it’s fairly low-tech. Give it a go and see if you can manage to budge whatever is clogging your drain. Or perhaps fish out all those yucky hairs and debris.

If You Have One, A Wet Vacuum

Firstly, make sure you have a tight seal around the drain opening. Set the vacuum to liquid and turn the vacuum to its highest speed.

Baking Soda And Vinegar

Mix together half a cup of vinegar and half a cup of baking soda. Immediately pour it down the sink and let it sit for an hour. The chemical mix will help to break up a lot of the gunk and hairs. Wash down with hot water. Hopefully resulting in a blockage free drain.

Boiling Water

This is an obvious one. However if the drain has been clogged for some time you may need to combine this with some of the other methods.

Plunger

Every household should have a plunger. And hopefully you won’t require a user manual. Make sure the plunger has a tight seal and try this a few times.

Liquid Drain Unblocker

This is probably the best method after all the others have failed. You can buy a bottle of liquid drain unblocker in your local supermarket or on amazon. Typically there is enough liquid for two attempts.

How to Repair A Blocked Drain

If you are facing a blocked drain repeatedly, you should call in the professionals. You really don’t want to be splashing around in a blocked toilet. However, if you want to fix it yourself. Here are some things that you can do.

Kitchen Drain

Think about some causes that got you here. If it is your kitchen sink, it might be that you have food blocked down there. The solution to this is easy. Just grab a kettle, boil some water in it, and pour it down the drain. Run the tap for a few seconds.

If the water does not drain, it’s time to bring in the plunger. Press it down on the plughole as this will help to shift down the blockage. When you pull it back up, it will create a vacuum that would allow the blockage to move forward.

Bath Drain

If your bath drain is not draining properly, you should check the plughole for hair. Most likely, it is what is creating the issue. If it’s in your shower, it can be fairly easy to fix. If your plug is a push lock stoppers, it can get more complicated. You will have to push the plug and turn the disc until it comes off. Clean the hair from the crossbars and it might work.

Of course, this is not a guarantee that the problem is solved. Now, it is time to grab the plunger. Pump the blockage so that it moves down. This should also help fix the matter. However, once again, there is no guarantee that it will fix the problem. Now, you will have to try something else.

The last thing you can do before calling in the professionals is to drain the cleaner. You can find this at the local supermarket. It will be available in different forms such as liquid, pellet or crystal. Which one you will buy and use depends on how blocked your drain is and how quickly you want it to become unblocked. Enzyme-activated drain cleaners are safer to use, but they will take one day to work. Alkaline cleaners work quickly but cause more corrosion. Before you use any cleaner, make sure you follow the instructions.

Hopefully, this solves the problem. If it does not, you should call the plumber and ask them to come in and help you. They are sure to fix the problem.
